Doctors' group trying to save primary care

Letter to the Editor:
The Times Union chose the right location — the front page — for the Sept. 10 Associated Press article “Fewer med students choosing primary care.” A crisis has been brewing for quite some time in primary care, and if the field of primary care is going to survive, the press, the physicians, and also our patients need to put the issue in the forefront.

In the 35 years I’ve been a primary care physician in Latham, I have witnessed dramatic change in the medical field. The profession I pursued because of my love of medicine and my desire to serve people, has deteriorated for a multitude of reasons, many of which were cited in the AP piece.

For this reason, Latham Medical Group is excited to be one of the first physicians’ offices transforming its practice in an effort to save the field of primary care, along with Community Care Schodack and Family Practice Clifton Park. Partnering in a CDPHP pilot, we are working hard to transform our practices into “patient-centered medical homes.”

It’s through this new concept that we see the solution to the primary care crisis. We hope the transformations will turn the tide on this critical issue. At the end of the day, I love being a family physician. I do not want to say we let primary care die on our watch.
