Director: Too soon to measure impact of medical malpractice laws
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The state insurance director says it’s too soon to tell whether restrictions on medical malpractice lawsuits are having an effect.
Ohio Department of Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson says the volatility of the medical malpractice market, especially soaring insurance premiums, is beginning to level off.
Hudson says the impact of the 2003 changes to medical malpractice law can’t be discounted as a factor in that trend.
But she says it’s too soon to say for sure and several more years of data will be needed.
The report compiled by the Ohio Department of Insurance says there were 4,006 medical malpractice claims reported for 2006, a 20% drop from 2005.
