You're Online…and It's Not Good

Side Note: Is there a conversation taking place about you that you don’t even know about? There may be. And, if that conversation is taking place online, there may be a lot of people involved in that conversation and an even larger (much larger) number of others witnessing it –and taking note. Oh, and did we mention that what’s being said about you may not be favorable or accurate?

Welcome to the world of online reviews and social media –and online reputation management. Worry about liability coverage and lawsuits is quickly being accompanied today by worry about managing one’s online reputation. While most physicians and practices probably don’t need to hire a professional online rep management firm, most of them should take some action and know where they stand online. The article below offers five simple steps that all physicians can take.

The first suggestion is to Google oneself, naturally. Related to this, every physician should set up alerts with Google and Yahoo with every variation of his or her name. Second, physicians should correct any mistakes or errors found. Next, physicians should create their own content. Unhappy Physician Even if some physicians themselves are not online, their names, comments on their style of practice, and complaints or compliments about them probably are.

All of the online content devoted to a particular physician could negatively impact his or her reputation, and subsequently his or her business, if steps aren’t taken to manage that content and — when necessary — defend it. This is often referred to as online reputation management.
