Program launched to mediate malpractice claims at hospital

Leaders of the Montgomery County Medical Society and the Montgomery Bar Association Thursday announced the launch of a mediation pilot program at Abington Memorial Hospital to avoid medical malpractice fillings.
The groups said they hoped the program, which they have been discussing for three years, would reduce costs and emotional distress.
In 2005, former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice William H. Lamb brought together the county’s bar and medical society to encourage cooperation in disputes about patient care.
Since then, they have been exploring mediation as an alternative to litigation in cases of potential medical liability. With the support of Lamb and the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, the two sides formed a mediation task force to launch the pilot program.
