Physicians honored for service

Three physicians, George Smith, Steve Smith and George Hester, along with community volunteer Buck Bouldin, were honored at the annual MD Gala Friday night in the MTSU James Union Building’s Tennessee Room.

Dr. George Smith was named Physician of the Year; Dr. Steven Smith, Clinical Excellence Award; Dr. Hester the Olin Williams Distinguished Service Award; and Bouldin the Community Service Award for MTMC.

The award-winners are voted on by the MTMC medical staff.

In naming Dr. George Smith physician of the year the nomination noted:

“Dr. Smith has been practicing as a family physician with Family Health Associates in Murfreesboro since 1979.

“Practicing healthcare is a ministry to Dr. Smith and his patients are thought of as family. Dr. Smith is a wonderful asset to the Murfreesboro community and he spends a great deal of his time doing charity work for various organizations.

“Dr. Smith did his internship and residency in family practice preventive medicine at George Hubbard Hospital in Nashville. Dr. Smith received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and he is certified by the American Board of Family Practice.�

In naming Dr. Steve Smith for the clinical excellence award, the nomination stated:

“Dr. Smith began his career at MTMC in 1999. Dr. Smith was MTMC’s first hospitalist. He came to MTMC to begin the Hospitalist Program and has grown the program to having six hospitalists on staff.

“Dr. Smith is very focused on quality, safety and communication between patients and physicians. Dr. Smith received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama, College of Medicine. He completed his internship at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Internal Medicine. Dr. Smith completed his residency at the University of Alabama Hospitals in Birmingham, Alabama in Neurology, and the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Internal Medicine. Dr. Smith is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.�

The recipient of the Olin Williams Distinguished Service Award is given to a physician who is dedicated to the betterment of MTMC and has shown great wisdom and compassion throughout their medical career.

In awarding Dr. Hester the honor, the nomination stated:

“Dr. Hester was an internal medicine physician with the Murfreesboro Medical Clinic in Murfreesboro for 37 years. He began practicing in 1969. Dr. Hester did Hospice work for 23 years. Although Dr. Hester retired June 30 of 2006, he is still actively involved with nursing homes and hospice work.

“Dr. Hester attended medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. He completed his internship at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and his residency in internal medicine at Emory University Hospital and Veterans Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.�

The Community Service Award is presented to someone who has shown outstanding service to the hospital and the community. The nomination giving Bouldin the honor noted:

“Buck Bouldin was chosen for the community service award for MTMC. Buck began his practice as an attorney in 1953, and he has been a member of the MTMC Board for more than 29 years.

“Buck served as a board member for the Christy Houston Foundation for many years, and has since become an Emeritus Director of the foundation. In appreciation of Buck’s years of service to the Christy Houston Foundation, they have established the Granville S.R. “Buck� Bouldin Allied Health Scholarship Fund. There have been two scholarships awarded.
