The Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA), the national insurance industry trade association representing medical professional liability (MPL) insurance companies and other entities, today issued a reminder that advance registration for its 2013 Medical Liability Conference will expire on April 12. Attendees who submit their registration prior to the April 12 deadline can save $100.  The Conference is the preeminent educational and networking event for stakeholders in MPL insurance.

“We are pleased to invite all MPL professionals to Palm Desert for the 2013 Medical Liability Conference,” said Brian K. Atchinson, president and CEO of the PIAA. “This event provides participants from around the world a unique opportunity to gain key insights on the global and day-to-day issues facing all entities involved in medical liability.”

Atchinson noted that those involved in MPL are facing a variety of challenges as a result of the transformation of healthcare. “This unique gathering will help attendees find innovative solutions for navigating through these uncertain times,” he said.

The Conference, which is open to the public, will take place May 15-17, 2013, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs in Palm Desert, California.

The keynote speaker for the Conference is Leonard D. Schaeffer, the Founding Chairman and Past Executive Officer of Wellpoint. As a national leader in healthcare, Schaeffer will provide an insider’s take on how participants in the U.S. healthcare system can prepare for a decade of continuous change.

Chad Karls, Principal and Consulting Actuary, Milliman, will brief attendees on the historical, and current, financial results of MPL carriers, highlighting the primary drivers behind the results. He will also offer remarks on what may lie ahead for MPL in 2013 and beyond.

The topic of communicating with patients after a medical injury has been a major—and sometimes contentious—issue for physicians, hospitals, health systems, and MPL companies. An international panel will discuss lessons learned from their experiences with communication programs in Australia, Singapore, and the U.S.

The 2013 Medical Liability Conference will also include a luncheon, where Laura Jacobs, executive vice president of the Camden Group, will address the issue of what a medical practice can do to survive and prosper in today’s turbulent market. Jacobs will discuss some positive developments, including opportunities to work within Accountable Care Organizations.

“By attending this one Conference, individuals with a stake in the MPL business will gain an unparalleled briefing in the state-of-the-industry for 2013 and the years ahead—not to mention unmatched networking opportunities,” said Atchinson.

“The PIAA has long been recognized for its distinct and comprehensive base of information and for its ability to serve a wide diversity of companies and other entities with a significant focus on medical liability insurance. This Conference represents another step in the PIAA’s ongoing efforts to meet the needs of the varied professionals who all work in this industry,” Atchinson said.
