The Ohio State University faculty physician practice that feeds patients to the university’s hospitals is expanding its Gahanna operation as part of an outpatient push into the suburbs.

OSU Physicians Inc. bought a former Big Bear supermarket building on Hamilton near Johnstown roads for $6 million and plans $5 million in renovations. The project will add about 70 jobs, including 20 physicians, when the practice moves from its current Gahanna office in September 2009.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg for us as it relates to our suburban expansion, said Richard Sobieray, chief financial officer of the nearly 550-physician group, an affiliate of the university.

Branching outOhio State is trying to improve access for patients, hoping to increase hospital admissions that are a key part of the financial strategy behind its planned $1.3 billion expansion of the OSU Medical Center, which oversees Ohio State’s hospitals and runs its network of outpatient clinics.
