Dr. Demuth named U.S. Family Physician of the Year

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) named Dr. David F. Demuth, M.D., FAAFP, the 2008 Family Physician of the Year at the opening ceremony of its Annual Scientific Assembly in Chicago, held yesterday.
The Family Physician of the Year award honors an “outstanding American family physician who provides patients with compassionate and comprehensive care, and serves as a role model professionally and personally to his or her community, other health professionals, residents and medical students.”
Dr. Demuth established his commitment to family medicine almost 30 years ago. In 1980, he dedicated his life’s work to providing quality health care to members of the York community, at the York Medical Clinic.
Janelle Davis from the AAFP said, “Dr. Demuth’s compassionate care and community involvement prompted many letters of appreciation recognizing his kindness and generosity. Nominations were submitted by patients and non-patients alike, who are proud to say the 2008 Family Physician of the Year practices in their hometown.”
He also serves as a preceptor, teaching future physicians about the joys and challenges of family medicine.”
“We become friends and family with our patients of all ages — from newborns to teenagers and senior citizens,” Demuth said in an earlier interview. “Being involved in all those aspects of life is the most rewarding; it’s the most fun.”
In addition to his clinic and managerial expertise, Dr. Demuth’s community involvement extends from the neighborhoods of York throughout the state of Nebraska. He has always had a strong interest in local sports and acts as a liasion for the York High School Athletic Department and local physicians, coordinating medical supervision at games, and also serves as team physician for many York area schools.
Davis said Dr. Demuth “further demonstrates his commitment to the community, by serving as a volunteer member of the York County Drug Task Force and the Habitat for Humanity. He also raises registered Scottish Highlander cattle and serves on the American Scottish Highland Cattle Association Board of Directors.”
He’s received many awards and accolades, including the Nebraska Academy of Family Physicians’ Family Physician of the Year in 2006 and Outstanding Teacher of Family Medicine during his U.S. Naval service at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Dr. Demuth completed his family medicine residency at McLennan County Family Practice Research Foundation in Waco, Texas, and earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. He received his undergraduate degree from Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney.
He and his wife, Deb, are the parents of three sons and one daughter. They also have one granddaughter.
